I was introduced to world of Skylands at the beginning of 2010 as an Activision consultant before being hired on as Design Director. Having worked on a series of established game IPs, this was a unique opportunity for me. I worked in conjunction with the studio and Activision to establish Sylanders as a brand, bringing the first Toys to Life game into the market.
There were a lot of scope and quality goals that we wanted to hit and a short amount of time until launch. So, I worked closely with the leads and production staff to infuse the game with new mechanics, adjust the level flow and layout to account for new pacing and mechanics, establish enemy archetypes and re-invent enemies, and managing a (large) new team of game designers.
It was a rapid production cycle, but this was the beginning of the brand and we were able to establish a consistent universe that we were all proud of.
